John J. Watson Basketball Tournament: Students Raise Over $3,000 for the Chris Dudley Foundation!
Olean, New York is about 2,700 miles from Portland, Oregon, but five students in Dr. Michael Russell's Event and Sponsorship Marketing class at St. Bonaventure University have made a huge impact anyway. The group of students had to plan and execute a charity event as a class assingment, and they chose to do it for the Chris Dudley Foundation.
Zachary Clark, Mike Iulianello, James Reed, Taylor Lang and Justin Walker decided to run a basketball tournament as their event, but not just any basketball tournament. It was to be held in memory of their late professor, Dr. John J. Watson, who passed away in May of 2012 of a massive heart attack at the young age of 45. Watson, a former collegiate and professional basketball player, taught in the Marketing Department of St. Bonaventure for nearly 8 years and was beloved by many.
The Inaugural John J. Watson 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament raised $3,072.62 for the Chris Dudley Foundation, a charity near and dear to the hearts of the Watson family. John's son, Noah, was diagnosed with diabetes at a young age and has been a benefactor of the organization.
All of the proceeds that the group earned will go towards helping children attend the camp. "Knowing that we're able to help several kids get the education they need to live an active lifestyle is an amazing feeling in itself, but doing it in honor of Dr. Watson is something extra special," Clark said.
The group hopes to pass on the torch of running the tournament to the next bunch that participates in the class. They want to do this not only for the Chris Dudley Foundation, but also for the memory of Dr. Watson.
5th Annual BBQ Ribs & Rods Event
The 5th Annual BBQ Ribs & Rods Event was a huge success, raising $10,000 for camp scholarships for kids with diabetes! The hosts of this event, Stan & Patty Dollar, and Patrick & Karri Duncan generously gave of their time, hearts, and homes to make sure the event would benefit kids with diabetes who want to attend the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp. The temperature that day reached 100 degrees; the best kind of day for a fun summer BBQ! The Sandy Saunders Band rocked out while guests enjoyed a first-class BBQ dinner by Slick’s Big Time BBQ, and checked out the hot rod show featuring the Sherwood Cruisers Car Club. Chris Dudley thanked everyone who supported the event, and shared his thoughts on how much camp means to the kids who get to experience it. There were winners all around in the raffles and silent auction: guests nabbed Timbers tickets, a weekend at a beach house, a Family Fun Package for Evergreen Wings & Waves/Museum/OMSI, and Chinook Winds & Casino Package. The contest winners were:
Best Ribs Contest – Marshall Smith
Car Contest – People’s Choice – Stan Dollar
Car Contest – Chris Dudley’s Choice – Bob Terranova

The 4th Annual BBQ Ribs & Rods Event
Good times! The Duncan and Dollar families did it again - they hosted a fun summer event which raised $10,000 for kids with diabetes to attend the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp! The dh1project is the name for the original and primary fundraising goal that lies at the core of diabeteshappens: profits from the sale of our merchandise will be used to sponsor children with Type 1 Diabetes to attend The Chris Dudley Basketball Camp. The camp is a week-long, once in a lifetime experience where young diabetics learn how to control their condition while playing an intensive sport with 16-year NBA veteran Chris Dudley. diabeteshappens is proud to work with our good friends at The Chris Dudley Foundation as we strive to provide support and unique opportunities for young diabetics around the world.
