The Mental Health of T1D Patients through the COVID-19 Pandemic

It's no secret that living through the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized number of mental health concerns. While those living with Type 1 diabetes have been dealt extra challenges with their diagnosis and whether they were diagnosed years ago, or more recently, researchers have found that they are some of the most impacted by these mental health concerns throughout the past year and a half.

Carrie Tully on Mental Health Concerns in T1D Patients

Carrie Tully, a pediatric psychologist at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, recently presented at the American Diabetes Association's 81st virtual Scientific Sessions on these concerns in her session titled "Behavioral interventions for pediatric diabetes during COVID-19". Tully outlined a number of heightened mental health concerns that have emerged throughout the pandemic for both T1D patients and their guardians including things like lack of social engagement, decreased access to support groups, anxiety over access to supplies, and heightened concerns due to virus vulnerability. She stated that in a study of families with at least one person with Type 1 diabetes, 84% replied that they had at least one life-altering occurrence, or "disruption" throughout the pandemic, such as a job change or move. Tully also noted that, while practitioners were able to provide virtual support and appointments, there was a period of adjustment for everyone which caused interruption in support and care for patients.
