TIPS FOR ATHLETES WITH DIABETES
Test, don’t guess
Check your blood sugar levels. Don’t take a guess at what you think you “might be.” Take the time to test. It’s better to know what you are, and be proactive, rather than reactive.
Have a plan
Know what you need to eat and drink, before, during and after games and other exercise. Know when to test, and when to snack. Know the signs of hypoglycemia and be prepared to correct it with snacks you have available. Routine is the key. Make sure to develop one.
Check with your doctor
It’s a good idea to check with your doctor, parents and diabetes team, before you make any changes in your diabetes plan, to make sure you’re on the right track.
Keep the right tools handy
Always keep with you the materials and tools you use for checking and treating, especially during games, practices, or other exercise.
Don’t “load” carbohydrates
Don’t “load” carbohydrates. Many people with diabetes can’t use them properly. Eat more calories during your activity, instead.
Pay attention to your body
Become aware of your own pattern of blood-glucose response to exercise. Pay special attention to your feet. Wear proper shoes and socks.
Let someone know
Tell your coach and teammates about your diabetes. Let others know, in case of an emergency. Understand that being open with your coaches, instructors and teammates can lead to achieving great things. Consider yourself a role model; one who can help educate people about diabetes. By letting others know you have diabetes, you can help them understand that diabetes doesn’t keep you from reaching your athletic goals. Just remember to follow these tips.
Live your life
Be active. Follow your dream. Don’t let diabetes stop you!
